As I stated during the review session last night, I will allow you to bring a 3 X 5 card into the exam with anything you'd like written on it. I will warn you that you shouldn't rely on the card too much...you should be able to answer all questions that I would ask without the card.

I will hold a review from 5:30-7:00PM in HEB 2008 (the same class that the lecture is held in) on Thursday, Sep. 13. I can also go longer if needed. Please bring questions as question and answers will be much more effective than my lecturing for an additional 1.5 hours.

Exams from the past two years (1st exams only) have been loaded onto web CT. Don't panic if you notice that some material is a little different...I included Ch. 13 the past two years. In addition, we probably spent a little more time on mass spec than I did in 2005 and 2006. I've also reserved 2008 HEB for next Thursday from 5:30 until 7:00 PM to review material and answer questions for the exam that will be held the following Tuesday. I also plan to hold additional office hours the Monday and Tuesday before the exam-I'll let you know the times sometime next week.

Today we will be moving along to talk about spectroscopy and will be covering IR, UV, and NMR along with mass spectrometry. Homework for the IR portion in Ch 2 is as follows: 38, 43-47.

CARBONYL REDUCTIONS

There really are only 2 issues to remember with carbonyl reductions and they are outlined in the 2 equations on this post. First, the negatively charged hydride source (LAH or NaBH4) transfers hydride (H-) to the carbonyl carbon to give an oxygen anion which becomes protonated upon workup (not shown).
The second thing to remember is that when esters or acids are reduced, 2 equivalents of hydride (remember that only LAH will reduce these) are transfered to the carbonyl. The reason for this is that the initial, tetrahedral intermediate, is unstable. This gives an aldehyde which goes on to react with LAH. Don't get caught up in what the aluminum or boron species looks like...just think of these as simple nucleophile-electrophile or acid, base couplings and remember that the proton on the alcohol that results from these comes from water.
